Things to do in Pwllheli
Pwllheli is a working market town rather than a resort: a long beach, a harbour full of masts, and a town centre with everyday shops and pubs. Here’s how to make the most of it from The Cwtch.

The beach on the doorstep
2 minutes’ walk
Pwllheli’s South Beach is the first thing to do and the last thing every day: a swim, a paddle, a walk through the dunes, a sunset. Our beach guide covers it and the best of the rest.
The marina and sailing
About 5–10 minutes by car
Pwllheli’s marina, Hafan Pwllheli, fills the harbour with yachts and dinghies. Beside it, Plas Heli, the Welsh National Sailing Academy and Events Centre, runs sailing courses and hosts events on the water.
- Check what’s on with Plas Heli before your stay if you’d like to get out on the water.
- Even if you don’t sail, the harbour is a lovely place to walk at sunset.
- Bringing your own boat? Contact the marina directly about berths and launching.
The town
About 5 minutes by car, or 20–25 minutes on foot
Pwllheli’s centre has independent shops, cafés, pubs and takeaways, and supermarkets for stocking up. Local pubs and restaurants are within walking distance of The Cwtch, along the shore and into town.
One guest’s tip is worth repeating: if you’re arriving late, bringing any food with you on your way through the closest town
saves a trip out later.
- Neuadd Dwyfor, the town’s theatre and cinema, is good for a film on a wet evening.
- Pwllheli is the end of the Cambrian Coast railway: a scenic way to arrive, or a day trip along the coast to Criccieth, Porthmadog or Barmouth.
- There’s a launderette nearby if you need one.
Rainy-day ideas
- Plas Glyn-y-Weddw at Llanbedrog: a historic house and art gallery about 10 minutes away by car.
- Penarth Fawr, a medieval hall house near Chwilog looked after by Cadw, about 10 minutes away by car.
- A film or a show at Neuadd Dwyfor in town.
- Or stay in: there are board games at The Cwtch, a TV and WiFi, and the slow cooker doing the work.
Eating in
The Cwtch’s kitchen has a hob, a slow cooker and a combi microwave, with pots, pans and the basics. There’s no conventional oven, so plan meals around the hob and the slow cooker, or treat yourself to a meal out.
