Pwllheli and Llŷn

Wales Coast Path walks from Pwllheli

The Wales Coast Path passes two minutes from The Cwtch’s door. Turn one way for an easy stroll into town; turn the other and you can walk to Llanbedrog and beyond. These are our favourite walks on Llŷn, from the doorstep outwards.

The path at your door

2 minutes’ walk

The Wales Coast Path follows the whole coastline of Wales, and on Llŷn it’s at its best: dunes and marram grass, long sandy bays, headlands, and on clear days the mountains of Eryri across the water.

From The Cwtch you don’t need the car. Walk down to the beach, choose a direction, and come home to a hot shower and the slow cooker.

Along the shore into town

Roughly 20–25 minutes each way

Turn east at the beach and follow the shore and the promenade towards the town centre and the harbour. It’s flat and easy, good in any season, and there’s coffee at the end of it.

Pwllheli to Llanbedrog

Roughly 4 miles one way

Head west along the shore, past the golf course, and follow the waymarked coast path to Llanbedrog’s sheltered beach and its beach huts. If you’ve still got legs, climb the headland above the beach for views across the bay and the Tin Man sculpture at the top.

  • Parts of the path along this coast run on the sand, so check tide times before you set off.
  • Buses run along the coast road between Llanbedrog and Pwllheli, so you can walk one way and ride back. Check the current timetable before you go.
  • Reward yourself at Plas Glyn-y-Weddw, the historic house and gallery just above the beach.

Llanbedrog to Abersoch

Roughly 4 miles one way

Carry on from Llanbedrog round the bay to Abersoch, mixing beach, dunes and quiet lanes. Drive to Llanbedrog to start, or make it one long day from the door.

  • The same coast road buses link Abersoch, Llanbedrog and Pwllheli.

East along the bay to Abererch

Roughly 3 miles one way from the harbour

From the harbour, the coast path heads east along Glan y Don and the long sands at Abererch towards Penychain. Big skies, open sand and views back across the bay to the hills of Llŷn.

Further afield

A short drive

Porthdinllaen headland

About 20 minutes by car to the National Trust car park at Morfa Nefyn, then out along the headland, down to the hamlet and the Tŷ Coch Inn on the beach.

Aberdaron and the tip of Llŷn

About 30–35 minutes by car. From Aberdaron the path climbs west along the cliffs towards the very end of the peninsula, looking out to Ynys Enlli (Bardsey Island). One of the wildest stretches of the whole coast path.

Walking tips

  • Look for the Wales Coast Path waymarks, but carry a map too. Ordnance Survey Explorer maps 253 and 254 cover Llŷn.
  • Check tide times and the forecast. Weather on the coast changes quickly, even in summer.
  • Wear proper footwear: sand, shingle and cliff paths are hard going in trainers.
  • Ask Ruth. One guest wrote that they enjoyed the walks she suggested.
